Making Pancakes

PANCAKE DAY

Pancake day or Shrove Tuesday falls this year on the 21st of February 2023 and is one of the most beloved holidays as it’s a day to celebrate pancakes.

The holiday was created by 19th-century British writer G.K. Chesterton as a way to encourage people to eat less meat during Lent (which lasts 40 days). His idea was well-received by the public, and today it is celebrated all around the world!

How do you make pancakes

Here is the most simple method for making pancakes:

Ingredients:

To make 12:  250g plain flour, 1 tsp baking powder, pinch of salt, 300ml milk, 3 eggs,

Method:

Mix flour, salt and baking powder into a bowl.  Make a well.

Mix in beaten eggs. Slowly add milk until combined.

You may want to add some vanilla extract or other flavouring or chocolate chips.

Mix well by hand or with an electric mixer until they’re smooth and lump-free

Pour onto hot griddle or pan and turn pan to spread evenly and begin cooking.

Once they are golden brown after 2-3 mins, flip or toss and cook the other side 1-2 mins.

Then what you do with them is personal choice.

Tips for making the best pancakes

Try chilling the batter for 30-60 mins before using it. This allows time for the gluten in the flour to relax and the starch to swell. The batter may thicken while chilling so just add a little water to thin it again. You are looking for the consistency of single cream.

Keep them warm in the oven separated by greaseproof baking paper to stop them sticking together.

What’s your favourite?

Try making them with your kids and get them to do the mixing.

Rainbow Pancakes:

Try separating the mixture into 5 pots and use food colouring in 4 of them to make a stack.

Small and tall:

Try pouring a small amount onto the pan and spreading it round with the back of a spoon for smaller pancakes.
